the itch
my parents opened a bank account for me so that i'd have money in times of emergency. take note... "E-M-E-R-G-E-N-C-Y". they put in 1000 bucks every month, knowing in the backs of their minds that their little daughter must be saving those for the big "E". well well well... they didn't discuss the parameters of emergency to me... how was i to know that books, movies, and more books were not considered as emergency? the last time i tried to withdraw, i was totally and utterly surprised to see that i had no money left in my account. where did all the money go? i wanted to pinch myself, hoping it was all a bad dream, but of course it wasn't. i know it wasn't. i dreaded the fact that i have the itch. i can't stop myself from spending my money until everything has evaporated, and i'm left a pauper. it was only then that i realized how easy it was to make 5000 bucks disappear. ka-ching! just like that. haay... so my account closed. happy days are over.

this afternoon, after i paid my fare for the jeepney, i counted the coins left in my pocket, and to my horror, discovered that i was 1 peso short for the next tricycle ride... i was shocked. i've never tried the 1-2-3 trick before... except for that time a driver made me walk in the rain and i forgot to pay him in my haste to look for cover. served him right. anyway, as i was saying, i've never tried to run away from my responsibility to my fellowmen, so i cannot bear the thought of paying less than what was required... so there i was, feeling guilty because i used to have a bank account, but wasn't able to keep it. now i have to walk. under the sweltering sun of an august afternoon. as i was punishing myelf with thoughts of sunburn and accumulated dust in my already pimpled face, i looked for coins in the hidden nooks of my back pack... thanks to my laziness, i have accumulated a fortune of 25 centavo coins in the pocket of bag (i was too lazy to put them in the coin purse where they belong), so i didn't have to walk home. whew.

lesson learned: save. and always remember the value of 25 cents.
